According to the back room guys at MSD they stopped making the 8993 several years ago due to the lack of sales.

I have a 8998 and have used it on a 8973. It really doesn't know the difference if you are emulating a crank trigger input.

Why not? I use mine to trigger the 8973 or the Grid by using the crank trigger input. I can change RPM up and down and that is what I need to check things. So you are saying I can't do what I have been doing?????

So tell me why I can't use it?

    8993

I have a 8998 as well but have never tried it to simulate crank trigger signal. I would still like to find a 8993 anyway as some cars i help with still run mags straight to six shooters etc without a trigger which i doubt the 8998 would be anygood for.

Even if your car doesn't have a crank trigger you can still connect the tester's crank trigger output to the system and make it believe the engine and mag are spinning so you have RPM into the electronics to test things. You can hook up a laptop to the 8973 or Grid and watch retards function on the screen or you can test autoshifters, racha and shift lights.

The 8998 has some extra inputs so it would work with a standard distributor type system.

I tried the 8998 on my 7730 Grid and got a low voltage error message. Also, the LED on the Grid went from green to orange. However, I was able to change the RPM but I disconnected it because I thought I might damage the Grid. Any thoughts?

Joe, there should be no reason that the tester would do that on a Grid. The only thing the tester supplies is a simulated crank trigger signal and nothing else. The crank trigger signal is the same regardless of what kind of race car it on. Which Grid plug did you connect it to

    Hi Mike,
I went from the 8998 Digital Ignition Testers (green/violet) crank trigger connector to the (green/violet plus ground) triangular connector to the Grid. The 8998 also has cam syc. (light blue/light green) wire and a white trigger wire with an alligator clip.
    Thanks, Joe

The only one that needs to be plugged in is the violet and green wire plug and power to the box. There is no reason why you should have a low power Grid condition from the tester being connected.
