We are using a Mallory Mag 3 to start our AJ olds, Sat after reinstalling our fuel tank we went to start the car, fired first time, but we had a fuel leak, shut the car off fixed the leak and it would not start, no spark at the plugs no spark at the coil, changed the coil and mag still nothing, pulled the mag kill wire off still nothing, only way we could get a spark is to remove the plugs and spin the motor then it sparks. with the plugs in 400-500 rpm, with plugs out 600 rpm, we have to be self starting so can't use a blower starter.

We have tried everything changed everything we could.

    We are looking for ideas

    thanks

The Mallory mags don't supply a whole bunch of spark, so if you put a bit too much fuel in, or the wrong kind of fuel, the plugs will get wet and it won't start. Don't use gas to start it unless it is reaaaally cold. What kind of gap are you using, anything over .015 doesn't give you any more horsepower, and makes it harder for the spark to jump.

Most mags need 600-650 rpm to make spark. I know the MSD Mag 44 needs 650 rpm for sure and it looks like you need 600 rpm so I am not surprised. IHRA/NHRA blown Promods have to have their own starters also. Most of them are using the new PowerMaster geared starters that are specifically made to overcome this problem. Call John Brady at PowerMaster and talk to him, he is a great guy and they have a great stuff. His number is 1.865.688.5953. Make sure you mention my name.

It should start at 4-500 RPMS in my opinion.
The 44s will start at 250 to 300.
The Mallory coils were always a little suspect.
Anyone remember the procedure for checking those coils? Was it 15 ohms?

Should start out new at 14.5 ohms or so. Usually settles in and stays at about 14.2. If it gets over 14.9, or under 14.0, it shouldn't be used.

that 14 ohms is read across what?

Measure the ohms from either of the primary wire terminals to the coil wire terminal.

just a thought, its not very hard at all to flood a motor out with gasoline. consider a mix of about 25% gas and 75% alcohol if not just all alcohol.

even when it is very cold, it only takes about one squirt of gas to get it going.
