Hey guys, looking for info on a KB block. Do any of you know who to contact that can decipher a serial number on a Hemi block? I haven't been able to contact anyone at Keith Black, just like everyone else in the past. I was told that they have been bought out and all records are gone. But hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. The serial # is 7803. Curious about deck height.

uHHH... Measure it? Crank centerline to deck face. A tape measure will get you close.

I measured as best I could. Got 9.250 across front end of manifold.

The serial number wont guarantee any measurements unless it new. Its probably been worked on a lot.

From what I have read, 8.5" is a standard deck. 9" is .100 tall. beyond that have not found anything...

I have a short deck KB here that the end rails measure 7 5/8" across and a low deck iron 400 block that measures the same and I know that the 400 has not been decked. I have an old KB stage 3 mockup block sitting in a dragster chassis that I have for sale. I "think" it was a standard deck height; it measures 8 9/16" across and it would not be surprising if it had been decked a bit over the years. I think that 9 1/4" would be taller than a standard deck height block.

Yes sir. From everything I have read, 8 1/2" is std deck so your 8 9/16 is probably same.

And if I am correct, does this make it a 48 degree lifter angle setup?

You would have to measure the crank to cam centerline distance to determine that; it has nothing to do with deck height. You could have any deck height with a standard (45 *) cam or a raised (1/4") (48*) cam.
I think standard deck height is 10.725; this would also be the height of a factory 426 hemi and the 413,426 & 440 RB wedge engines. Short deck is -1/2" or 10.225 and this would be the factory 361,383 & 400 B wedge deck height. I think KB had up to something like 11.225 deck heights available.
I think a standard cam is called 2.125" diameter and then I think the options for larger 60 and 65mm cams could have become available in later versions.
Oh, I think that the standard crank to cam centerline is 5.152" so the raised cam must be 5.402" if I am correct that it is up .250".
Hope this is all correct & that it helps, Jeff Johnsen
