Well, after having a problem with oil pressure tomorrow during our test session, i brought it home and started digging today. I found that the oil pan was closed up against the pick up just a little, i think the chassis support moved during the last road trip. I contributed this to the low oil pressure.

I fixed the bow in the pan, and measured everything again. Now i have my 3/8" clearance again.

Just for the hell of it, i pulled all the rods caps, and they are in great shape. I started pulling mains and found that #2 bearing was loose in the cap and black. Not spun, just black. 1/2 the main journal is showing black marks.

Well it sounds to me like you may need to run out and buy a few lottery tickets.....You came very close to spinning a main. If the pan got caved in at the pick up it may have not shown on the gauge as a low oil pressure issue but I would be willing to bet that the restriction in the pump inlet caused pump cavitation which gave you that lovely colored Brg. How is the crank?

Thanks Gary. I think i'll do that. I could use the $ too. :)

Great meeting the Lavoies on Friday. They talk highly of you. Very nice people. Looking forward to having a beer or 6 with them next weekend.

    Now for my technical question.

When you black a journal, how do you fix it? It is still smooth as a babies butt, but it is colored. Can you have it cut .010? If so, should i have just that ONE journal cut? Why throw away 4 good mains journals? The bearing stayed put in the block, so the cap & block should be fine. There is a hint of color in the cap. I haven't seen the block saddle yet. The crank is still in it.

No, i am going to pull the crank out tomorrow and mic it out. Hopefully it'll be in spec. If it measures out ok, can i run it with the color on it?

Without seeing the crank it is hard to say . Hell if you are pulling the crank out run it down to the machine shop and have it polished. I would bet you can polish it out if you do not have any transfer on it. You might as well have it magged at the same time .

No transfer. It 'feels' perfect. I"l have it magged this week. Pictures coming, once it 'falls' out of the block.

You should at least get it polished, and make sure it is not out of round. If it won't polish out within .001 or so of spec, my preference would be to just grind the one main. The only dis-advantage is that you have to remember that this main is the only small one, but I would rather do that than grind the rest down. You can also send the crank to a good repair shop (like Velasco), and they can chrome it back up to standard for a reasonable cost.

Ditto John. These are 270* bearings, not full groove. The markings on them make them look like full groove though.

The crank will be at the shop tomorrow getting a full checkup.

Did you pull the engine out of the chassis or are you really going to drop it out the bottom? I've never liked that idea...
