I believe it’s galling between the hub and gear, not on the shaft.

I would recommend an idler assembly with the outboard support. The idler pulley is probably tipping inward.
Standard stock cam diameter is 2 inch. 2.125 is usually called big cam. 60MM cam came later on!
Find someone with a manifold with a known deck height, and have them measure the end rail surface on the manifold. That should give you the answer.
Measure the intake manifold end rail gasket surface. That length changes with the deck height. I don't have a block to check, but I'm sure...
