It's really hard to beat Jeff Bohr setup he uses. His starter is the fastest turning in the industry. Think pricing is in his website. I have a meizerr 24 volt and it's ok. Not the quickest but it's never let me down. The tilton ones work for about 3/4 of a season and then fail at the worst times.

I've used the 12v Hitachi Diesel starter with a 16 v battery for years. Currently have it on 4 blown alcohol cars,...one with a ProMag. Spins the motor plenty fast and keeps on cranking. I think we over think this area some times. My opinion anyway.

Most of the mini-starters use the Hitachi starter motor. The Diesel starter motor is about 1 1/2" longer. They are visibly longer. Tough starters, handle the 16v without any problems. The 16volts hops up the 12v starter and spins the motor fast enough for any ignition,...including the ProMags.

Ron can this starter be used on the left side of the engine? Who sells this starter?

We use an on board Tilton super 12 volt starter powered by a Miersch 24 volt remote battery pack and charger. Our set up uses 10 foot flexible welding cables and a Quick disconnect 50 amp connector. Back up to this system would be Two 12 volt car batteries in series.

We have started 17:1 N/A and 9:1 supercharged motors, that have an MSD Pro Mag 20, with this system

I have run 24 volts for over 18 years, on Tilton and Hitachi Planetary drive on board starters with no problem.

The 12 volt starters seem to like the 24 volts, which results in less current draw for the starter. Frank Parks does a similar thing with 24 volts .

John at Hayden Wheels also has a 24 volt battery system for sale. Very light weight. Used by the Jr fuel bunch and others with high compression N/A motors and Pro Mags.

Dana Wardell has hemi onboard starter mounting solutions.
He runs ads in the sales portion of this web site.

Yep, 24v would spin the 12 v starter even faster and push the insulation breakdown faster. But personally, have never seen a need to go higher than 16 v.

The Hitachi Diesel starter is pretty much the Specialty Industry standard. The Various Stater Vendors just call them different names. Like Super Starter or something else. No reason to reinvent the wheel when these are proven. I've never needed a Left side so don't have an answer for you. No doubt someone is machining the housing fixture and adapted a Hitachi Diesel stater motor to,it.

What about tooth count and pitch? What’s everyone running for a flexplate tooth count? 167, 164, 137? What tooth pinion goes with each?

Just make sure and run a 10DP tooth flexplate and starter and they seem to always work fine for me. I ordered the 24 volt CSR starter (and their CSR Smart Box) when they first came out and it burnt up the first trip to the track on a blown alcohol hemi. I had a old used Factory Chrysler starter for back-up with me (and they are 10DP teeth) and put it on the ProMod and ran it 2 years starting with 24 volts.
I have a new standard 12 volt TS106H Mezire (and we used one on a friends blown alcohol hemi for a year-NO Problems) going on a new motor now, just because I think it might spin faster. But most 12 volts work well with 24 volts as long as you start rather quickly and no spinning forever too-Jim
