Apparently I have an older KB Olds block made before they were produced with provisions for a starter on the passenger side of the block.

What is the best way to overcome this issue, modify the block, mount the starter to the mid plate,...........or?

Anyone that can help with pics, or? would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

Not sure if this is your situation, but KB Olds blocks used there own starter mounting block that bolted to a standard mini starter.

Talked to Ken Black, and he says the later blocks had a mount on the passenger side. The block I have, and others that I've seen, don't have the mounting area on the passenger side. The bellhousing part of the casting extends down all the way to the pan rain (aprox. 3" below the crankshaft bore centerline)

Again, anyone that has one of these early blocks, any help in solving this problem would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

Do you still have those pics? I have a KB Olds that I'm trying to mount a starter on the passenger side.
    Thanks in advance.

525 Hemi crank 015.jpg 525 Hemi crank 013.jpg Not a KB Olds but I mounted my starter to the Mid plate on the pass side on a KB Hemi. Used a Mopar style starter to mock it up, Milled a pocket and mounting holes. Works great for me

As long as you can create an access to the Flywheel/Flexplate and generate the proper offset for the two gears you can place the opening anywhere...left side, right side, bottom doesn't matter. I used a GM 168 tooth flexplate with an eight bolt mounting pattern, replaced the 9t pinion with an 11t pinion (maybe vice versa) and machined it so the starter pinion CL was the correct distance from the crank CL. Stabbed in some mounting holes, and mounted the starter in upside down. I don't recall the center distance I'd have to look it up again but not that big a job

On the kb I have they drilled the pan rail with a mini starter
Bolt pattern It’s pretty screwy but it works. I’m pulling
Motor out in 2 weeks and I’ll get pics for you . The only thing is that the starter gets closer to the crank because it’s below crank centerline so the starter moves closer to the crank . This was all done with a 168 tooth ring gear

Finally got it done with Meziere Ent. They were very helpful and now they have my drawing and others to have one custom made to fit their KB starter application. Ref my name of Phil Hunsucker drawing. IMG_20200304_204210.jpg

I used a Power master (aprt # 604) pinion to convert both the Powermaster MOPAR mount and a stock MOPAR mini starter to work with a GM flexplate
