Would the mt 3189 34.5x17-16 be a good set of tires for a blown application? Mt says they will but everyone knows how that goes. Most are only after making a sale. I'm outlaw so run on a lot of marginal tracks. No rules involved hence outlaw. I'm trying to steer clear of Hoosier since continental has acquired the company. Junk is what continental makes been there done that. Guy says he can get me the 3189s for $388 each delivered to my door.

If Continental aquaired Hoosier doesn’t mean that Hoosier has or will change their compound. Haven’t heard of anybody switching from them

I’ve run both Mickey Thompson’s and they both work. If I was on a marginal track I’d be looking for a set of Goodyear 34.5 in the 2922 compound if there are any still around.

I see what you're saying mike canter. But even the guys who work at continental tire don't even buy their tires from them. They even have told us they are junk and like when weld bought out a lot of other wheel companies their quality went down. Why you're seeing a lot more American racing, r.c. components, holeshot sander etc wheels. One of the main reasons I'm probably going to mt is 1 I can get them for less than distributor cost. 2 for $600 delivered to my shop. I wish they still made the 36 mt tire you could stick it on a dirt Road lol. But mt tech says the largest tire they make now is the bubba grande which is 35x15-16. We were having all kinds of issues shaking like crazy didnt matter if we took power away, put more to them and even changed the clutch setup and nothing changed. The 2055s were new in 2007 and probably don't have more than 40 runs on them. But my old 3199 Goodyear tires from 2004 will stay glued and there is no dry rot etc in them. I wipe the insides down with baby oil since dawn removes oil it wouldnt be a wise idea and I think it would dry the tire out. We match race and were going to do some funnycar chaos events but they have decided to run it like nhra and have all the b.s. rules that come with it. Not spending 7k to run a few races a season with them. Ive got something in the works to put a hurt on em stay tuned.

Where very bit counts is NHRA Promod. Last season was the fastest in history and it all depends on your 330’ times. Only Hoosiers will give you that performance. If you are not trying to spin the earth then you can use other brands. If Hoosier change their compound then NHRA Promods will drop them right away so I seriously doubt Continental will mess with success. Tire shake is normally caused by not knowing the correct driveshaft rpm required for the tire on that specific track and most of the time is the fault of the tuner and not the tire

Now there is a true statement indeed about the 3199's.

Have a set of brand new 3199's I can part with, if you are interested. Have been bagged and stored in cold storage since bought.

Also have a likewise set of 1490's.

Funny what a person accumulates over the years.........

Here's what I have seen from running both Hoosier and Goodyears on Top Alcohol cars.

The Hoosiers definitely hook harder, so they can certainly be prone to shake. The "conventional" 34.5/17 Hoosier has a softer sidewall. So it absorbs more power, hooks the tire harder. You have to pay the tax man the more you wad the tire up, there will be recoil.

The 17/34.5 or 17/36 has a different sidewall/section width design that is stiffer than the 'conventional' tire. These are called 'slipper' tires 'nitrous' tires or 'pro mod' tires. These tires will not wad up quite as easily at the hit.

In TAD or TAFC I rarely see a Hoosier shake much past 1.6.

On several occasions I have seen the Goodyears shake on out to 1.9-2.0.

I think they have a stiffer sidewall construction. They can be a very smooth tire when you get the tune up right but it seems like you have to be a little more gentle putting the power back in with a Goodyear.

The M/T is the easiest tire to get wheelspeed. That's why they are popular with 2000ish hp cars and down. It is probably the stiffest sidewall so it's more stable and less prone to shake with a variety of combinations. It's also the easiest to smoke the tires.

The liners help any of the above tires stabilize the sidewall and limit how much the tire can squat. That's why they have the wider window on the tune up.

I have always preferred the Hoosiers, but I'm not afraid to get after a car either. I think they work best on marginal tracks.

Interesting Will. I have used the Big Bubba with great success running as quick as 3.70. But running in the low 70's or trying to go in the 60's I will agree that it becomes easy to go up in smoke. I'm going to try and find a tune up for the Hoosier TD 3 and/or TD 7........

No, but I believe Will has some experience with hardtail dragsters too

I know things have changed but a little story...

Jeff Wilson was running the MT TAD tire on his car in Indy and couldn't get off the line without smoking the tires. Jeff Bohr pulled an OLD set of Hoosiers off the wall of his trailer and let Wilson try them. Wilson about flipped over it did such a big wheelstand.

Two years ago at a divisional a TD racer came to me for help; he put a new set of MT's on and it was going up in smoke every run. He was having some issues shaking with the old MT's. The car was pretty aggressive early. We got stupid with the tuneup backing it down, way rich on jet, barrel valve and like 10 degrees out on the button and it still didn't move 6". Argued with the MT guy and he said there was nothing wrong with his tires. Told him to walk over to the purple trailer and get some tires that would hook. Put his old tune up back in and never looked back.

I switched another customer from Goodyear to Hoosier. We had smoked the tires 9 out of 11 runs with the Goodyears. Left the tune up alone and put Hoosiers on it, won the next race.

Obviously people haul ass with Goodyears too in Top Alcohol. It's fair to say I'm used to tuning with the Hoosier. But I'm pretty aggressive early. There's a reason why you don't see the MT's on the higher hp blown cars, whether it's dragsters, funny cars or pro mods.

I'll also give some credit where it's due, I think MT obviously has some smart people designing tires. They have a good hold on the market they make tires for.

I remember being at Martin for the last Ihra event they had. We were running MT tires all year going 6.30s. As we got into the lanes and the Hoosier guy was like hey do you wanna use all the tire or just 1/2?!? I was like huh? He shows me that the tire was cupped , only using the outside of the tire. I said I’ll just put air in them. It’ll be fine..... shook the next 4 runs. Went down bought a set of tires and never looked back. Felt like a complete jackass.

I run a top fuel bike. If you look at almost any top fuel bike you will find a 14 x 31 MT. I don't know what the difference is. I have seen pictures of a guy (who was sponsored by GY) from the front of the bike with the front wheel up. There was a BIG W and only the outside inch or so was touching. Guys say the GY is easier to ride but most run on a 12" wheel. We run a 14" wheel as do the top teams.
They do hook much harder than the Goodyears on OUR bike. I have found that I have to run a little more air in the Mickeys than other tires and am currently running about 8 3/4. That will vary with the track.

As I said at the beginning, I don't know what the difference is.
Some of the lower classes do have better results with Goodyear and Hoosier.

Ok will thanks for insight. We run on a lot of marginal tracks and my theory is if I have the hardest hooking tire out there with a marginal surface it would be easier to go up in smoke etc. I always run liners or beadlocks also. A buddy of mine runs a twin turbo dragster and he runs mt slicks and has hauled ass with them on marginal tracks he never could get the Hoosiers to stop shaking or even chattering. I'm going to keep my old 2055s mounted and mount up a pair of 34.5 mt on liners and 36 mt on beadlocks and see what happens.
