I just picked up a door car roller. It has Hoosier 17-36-16 tires on it. Prior experience has been with the 34.5's. Combination will be roots blown hemi, powerglide, ~2500lbs. Do the 36's have any advantage or disadvantage over the 34.5's? (other than needing to put a lower gear in it...)

You didn’t say if they had liners or were bead locks. Great tire with bigger footprint than the 34.5”. You can get very aggressive with them. Just maintain your correct wheel speed

    They're mounted on bead locks.

Thanks Mike. I figured with the bigger footprint it might help on questionable tracks over the 34.5.

It’s a lot of monkey see monkey do in nhra. I have a few nhra friends and they see a car throw down a killer pass with a certain tire and then they’ll go buy same tire to see what’s different. But if this past year has shown us with radial racing , why the hell are we using these monster heavy ass tires when radial tire are going quicker. Do we need 36s? Or 34.5? Maybe we can go just as fast on 33.5? I’m not sure , but someone with a great rnd program could prolly tell us.

Top NHRA Promods have done a lot of testing and are really fast with the tires they are using. Not sure there is much “monkey see, monkey do there” , only proven results in testing. NHRA Promods have strict rules so every little bit counts. The reason radials are so fast is because they are allowed traction control and not limited on rear gear ratio.

and there's a lot of really fast passes on 10.5's as well... I think what it really comes down to car setup and tuning - a good tuner can make a car work with what he's got to work with (and if you've got no limitations beyond the tires sometimes you have a lot to work with :) ).

I was looking more for "oh crap don't use those tires on a blown door car" kind of info. It sounds like they should work fine for what I'm doing, I'll just have to make sure I've got the gearing set up accordingly.

Radials aren't very fast outside of tracks prepared for radials. Really wouldn't work good in NHRA Pro Mod after Top Fuel/FC has 'dug' a hot day bald spot on the line.

There is some monkey see monkey do on the turbo side .Lots were running the goodyear tire after a big team went to them. The quickest turbo run was made on a 36 hoosier on bead locks the year before same car had NHRA record on the ''little'' MT tire The record holder now is on 34.5 hoosier (blower clutch) The champ was on goodyears (turbo) All are good tires just have to have a good program to manage wheel speed to make them work.Dont get lost and change tires because someone else is fast on them .........

I don’t think the initial accelaration is the same for a NHRA turbo car compared to a NHRA blower car so different wheelspeed requirements and because of this a turbo car can run a different tire than a blower car. I think comparing a turbo to a blower is comparing apples to oranges.
