The Lenco CS2 uses an air pod to stroke (rotate) the radial shift plate lever, which then causes 4 rollers to ramp into slots in order to compress and apply the clutch pack. Say 200 psig air pod pressure. The mechanics of all of that results in say "X" clutch pack clamping pressure. The capacity of the clutch per section is then "X" times the number of active friction surfaces for the section.

The B&J uses air to push on the total area of the apply piston, which then causes the clutch pack to compress and apply. Clamp force is a roughly a function of piston area times pressure. Say 400-450 psig air pressure. The capacity of the clutch pack per section would then be "Y" times the number of active friction surfaces for the section.

I don't have the disassembled parts to measure in front of me right at the moment to measure and compare, but have done some guesstimating.

Am I correct in assuming that the B&J has a bunch more clutch capacity per section than the Lenco? Or am I missing something here? I could easily be way off base here. Just wondering out loud.

    Thanks.

When the Lenco pod rotates the pressure plate it is ramped so more pressure is really applied than what you are computing. We use the CS2 in ProXtreme with 3000+ HP with no problems as long as you adjust the clutches correctly. And I am not saying that the B&J is not as good. I have known fast cars that use them also.

Thanks Mike. Yeah, I included the ramp effect. I took a SWAG at 45 degrees for the ramp angle.

ramp is closer to 10-15 degrees, much mechanical advantage.
