Crank advice for a fuel block to run on alcohol

    I now have come the the point where I have to purchase a crank and pistons and need some advice or combo info does any of the following sound sane?

    Have the following:
    -Block TFX-96 4.187 sleeves 3" Mains
    -Rods AJPE 7.086" Length 1.156" pin 1.600" pin end width
    -BAE fuel heads 200cc chambers

    -Want to go with a 4" stroke crank which will give me the following (unless I am wrong)
    With a deck clearance .020" and head gasket at .050" piston compression height of 1.72" I figure this would give the pin plenty of material overhead and also gives a rod ratio of 1.77.

    Not sure on the 1.72 CH... By my calculations: 10.725 deck - 0.020 clearance - 7.086 rod - 2 (half stroke) = 1.619

    Johnson's site lists a fuel piston that's 4.187 x 1.617CH, so that matches up about right. You may need a bigger dome than the fuel piston has to get the compression up for alcohol, but at least it's a sanity check on the CH calculation.

    Personally I'd rather run a longer rod and put the pin up in the oil ring with the CH down around 1.4xx for alcohol, but I understand you're trying to put something together to use the rods you already have.

    Thank you for this backup and insight I forgot to add the deck height of +.100 10.825”. I contacted Ross pistons and they came back to me and said they could make this work with a 4” stroke however if CH have safely been used in the 1.4 range I maybe able to go with a slightly longer stroke will have to figure when I get home. Ah one strange thing from Ross when I told them the pin size on the rods is they said they or their vendors don’t accommodate a pin that size 1.156 I bought for sure they had made a fuel piston before. Any other suggestions for piston manufacturers who could supply a custom fuel piston with a dome to bring CR up?

    You said your chambers were 200cc. That sounds like the modern 100 tall fuel head. Now you say you have a 100 tall block. So + 200 ? Odd combimation.

    Odd it may it be but trying to make it work all used fuel parts for nostalgia racing not trying to rotate the earth or make a name for myself. They are the tall heads however the +.100 on the heads how does that get added to the overall and put it to +.200? Everything above the deck surface would be chamber conformance depth? Chamber conformance depth taken in consideration to make domes with proper reliefs to bring CR up. Thank you for your response any help is appreciated I am not an expert nor claim to be just learning as I go.

    I'm not an expert either but will an intake manifold fit +100 block and +100 heads ??. Hopefully experts will post.

    Yes JR from RBS superchargers provided me with an Indy intake that fits very nice! I am still not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Have you run any fuel stuff on alcohol? I am not the richest guy so my venture started out with a TFX fuel block I could pass on for the condition or the price. Slowly closing in on making her rotate.

    I would talk to Jeremy at BAE. Many people run fuel heads on alcohol. He is an expert and honest in his advice.

    hi all!
    just asking info on "fuel heads":
    is the term "fuel head" associated with a head manufacturer(in this case BAE as many times i read about fuel heads,BAE is often associated to it) or is it a type of heads,made by various manufacturers?

    Yes a type of head associated with different manufacturers. To me its linage is more associated to the OEM 426 head however with slightly different modifications in additional material added to the mating surface to the head where it meets the block stands that may be at a different geometry than factory and a few other performance mods however overall still retains many traits of the OEM 426 heads.

    The problem you may have with the .200 tall combo, is the rings will hit the relief in the top of the sleeve.... You may want to make the heads std deck.. 175 cc the problem with fuel heads is it's hard to get the compression high.. I did it, but it wasn't easy.. If I can help, give me a call... Mike.
