I have an off board starter and need a new solenoid for it. Does anyone know what it is commercially used for ? I am over in the UK so would like to source one over here , the shipping and duty in getting one from RCD would double the cost.

    Thanks :)

You didn’t say what voltage and is this a Ford type looking starter solenoid. If so I know that you must have CAT sales and repairs around you. They make a 24 volt Ford type solenoid that I have used in the past. Google CAT 24 volt starter relay.

Was at the National Tractor Pulling Championships this weekend and know of 2 RCD starter solenoids that failed. These were new units. They were either 36 or 48 volt systems. Both were plastic encased(?). I know the sparks flew when the terminal were jumped, but you gotta do what you gotta do to start the motor. One used a big crescent wrench to jump the terminals. I've had two 48v solenoids fail on me. So I used a standard Ford 12v solenoid and ran a separate cable(cable tied to main cables) to one of the 12v batteries. Have not had a failure since.

The new RCD solenoids don"t last long on 48 volts we put a resistor before the solenoid to lower the voltage to 24 volts.
the older aircraft solenoids for the older RCD starter can be used with 48 volts,

It is not voltage that burns up solenoids it is high amp flow Every time the contacts open or close the high current flow arcs the contacts. If you but a resister in line then you raise the amps. You might try a 12v Max 300 amp continuous duty Solenoid with nickel contacts used for golf carts and winches. If you search on Amazon for a MaySpare JD4T300A or 12v 300a solenoid made by MaySpare

Some years back Cadmium was declared a health hazard and silver-cad oxide contacts were replaced with other alloys, such as silver-tin oxide, which do not perform as well.

If you can find an older aircraft solenoid as h2b said, look for a Cutler-Hammer logo on the base of the contact set. It will be a CH with a logo.

Gregory Whitney in Arizona is a source here in the states, but like you said, overseas shipping adds $
