Some of the clutch manufacturers are using a 3rd support bearing for input shaft....bolts into the back of the pressure plate and supports a bearing just ahead of the throwout bearing....Pretty sure Leanders was the first to offer this....

We were seeing just a little wear in the rear main bearing - nothing real bad - just a small dark area on the lower bearing shell only - so talked with Roger at Crower and while they are re-certing the clutch I'm gonna have em install this 3rd bearing - and it's a Crowerglide not a pedal clutch so they can retrofit both....I was always told that rear main issues are most likely caused by problems in the clutch area

You were told correct. I made a candlestick years ago with a bearing in it for the same concept. Rear main looked better but still not great. We ran one of those clutches with the bearing in the hat and had it the engine on the limiter at 11k from 1000’ on. Previously the rear main would have been toast, but it was picture perfect. The fact that the hat is spinning at a different speed than the input shaft makes that deal really strong and stable. You just have to make sure you have enough input shaft spline length for the bearing to reside. The other thing is take a look at that bearing frequently as it’s quite the harsh environment with all sintered iron dust floating around.

Cool! For years I have often wondered about doing something like that, and now here it is in real implementation. Neat.

So basically a person could have a pretty stable/balanced 2-4 disc clutch?
