Had a customer try it one time, with the compression of an alc motor pretty much destroyed it, burnt all 8 to the rods

There have been plenty of people to run big block chevys on nitro over the years. Oddy did it, Greytek did it and a few others during the nitro coupe days at around 20%. There have been others in Nostalgia top fuel and funny car that have ran a Chevrolet style engine successfully. Steve Nichols comes to mind, he used to run the AJPE Billet BBC. I believe the McClain brothers have also done well in Top Fuel. There was a guy that was even running a blown Nitro small block for awhile. There have been many Chevrolet Jr fuelers as well. I have heard people say that 20% is the limit, but I just don’t believe that. It may hold true for say a certain compression ratio and camshaft... There was a good article on the inter webs a few years back about switching over to nitro and if I remember correctly 33% was the ideal number to maintain a proper air fuel ratio. On a final note, you probably would have gotten a better answer if this was in the Tech section and not the pit buzz where most of the gossip happens.

There are a lot of chevy's on nitro, the original question was could you run an "ALCOHOL" BB on nitro, to me, the question is about compression, not motor style

THANX that is was I told the guy that was tellin me he had done it I told him from wat I had learned was more about having the compression correct or at least close he had also said he basically just added some nitro to his fuel tank and also he had a powerglide trans he was tryin to gain a few tenths and said he did

Yes ; many years ago (1980's) I ran some. A crate LS7 454 with a small roller cam and a hilborn stack injector. PG 150-2 pump. Lenco 3 speed in a 125" 1900 pound altered which was super comp and fast brackets, it would go 8.50 all out on methanol; same jet and nozzles with 20% nitro sped it up to 8.0; I did run up to 30% with the same nozzles and smaller main jet occasionally. It never hurt a thing; biggest difference was the torque increase, it would have really liked a powerglide with a tight converter.

The Metal Mafia ran recently a AA/FA on high percentages of nitro with an iron block BBC. I don't know if they are still racing in 2018.

I'm currently running a 427 on 92%, yes compression is key!. We are very conservative with our deal, still learning.
My dad ran 30% on a 454 motor with just a nozzle change and pill, an alcohol motor. Ran great! It is possible. I don't know about not changing the nozzles though. Spud Miller had a great article on doing that on an injected motor on his website.

6-71 blower. Only making about 25lbs, again we are conservative as we learn we have been stepping it up.
Been running a Littlefield competition that I now have for sale because I bought a LB-20 6-71.

is anyone going to stick their neck out and say what sort of compression, or is it cloak and dagger stuff.

Well, the LS7 I ran.....big block all iron engine, not the new little unit, was 12.25:1 compression static. Your as built cylinder pressure will vary depending on cam and its installation. This was an injected engine, not blown. IF you have the correct pump, nozzles and main jet for methanol: as I understand it, you will be progressively rich below 20% nitro/methanol, correct at about 20% nitro/methanol and progressively lean above 20% nitro/methanol. There are sites with fuel system data for this which should be investigated if one were to run some nitro. In my case, with the above engine, it was very happy on 20% with exactly the same methanol compression/pump/nozzles. It never hurt so much as a bearing, ring nor piston. Buyer beware, your results may vary..........JeffJ
