Blown Alcohol Hemi Water Block and Head Engine Overheats

    Hi,
    I am running a blown alcohol 572 CI Hemi water block and heads. Running it with water radiator and water pump. I was running the engine pretty fat while getting used to it and never had heat issues. Now that i am used to the car i have been leaning out the tune and i have had boil over problems at the line. Let me give an example. In the past never turned on the pump or fans during a run. So this weekend at Wild horse pass 75 degree day. I warmed the car up in the pits. water temp was around 140. I went up to the line did a pretty big burn out accross the line about 150 ft (have to put on a show) backed up staged brought the car up and waited for the light no light. timing system broke. Shut down. waited for them to fix it. A couple of minutes. Try to start the car and it wont start because it is hot. around 220. pull it back to the pits. Cool it down. back to the line. cengine temp is 140. This time i turn on the fan and pump once i get it started. Do a burnout. Not so big this time. Stage. Blow the tires off and idle down the track. shut off and see the temp at 200. The engine seems to be making more heat than it should. Is this normal?? Any recommendations?

    How lean??


    I ran a BBC 14/71HH combo with water heads and block at 54% over. How lean is your idle? For such a short time under power, I would find it very odd to see those temps unless the idle was putting a lot of heat into the motor.

    I put another flat into the barrel valve at the track and checked it when i got the car back to the shop and leakdown was 42%. Do think i just built up too much heat in it in the pits before richining it up and then it didnt take much once it was heat soaked??

    That is what I am thinking. Mine ran really cool, like 180 at the end of a run and I could cool it down really well with the electric water pump and fans while charging the battery.........

    over heating

    The barrel valve only affects the idle, 42% seems lean to me. The main jet may be the problem if it's too lean at WOT

    A blown engine need 72 to 85 % leakdown.
    then play with the main jet.
    See Spud Millers Tune up site to get close.
    Fill out the form and get a ballpark,
    are you running a clutch or auto.

    What is your idle speed at ~40% ?!?

    I've also got to think its getting very lean on the hit.

    Alky funny and dragster both where in the 74 to 80% range.If its 40% you have got to have jet way fat to help cover it. Problem is once the conbustion chamber gets hot its realy hard to cool it back down,I found this accidently with bad pump and some work with Ralph Gorr. If setup right you would not need the water system unless you riding thru town with it.
