What is a good number for timing with Mallory V mag, 540ci all aluminum conventional head BBC, 14-71 hi helix 38lbs boost, 8000 rpm, 990 pump, 10.5 comp.... I was thinking 35-36 or is this too much for this combo?

In my experience that has been too much, 31-34 is likely where the dyno would tell you to be.

We ran 34 in our BBC . Be on the safe side until you get a tune up.
Hope you run fast and Good Luck

We run almost exactly that combo (Promag 12 instead of Mallory). Plugs and oil both look great and performance has been great at 32 degrees.

    BBC timing

532, 11.5:1, 32 lb, again very similar running 32-33 and it loves it, revs like a small block !
