How do you guys time a MSD 44 mag for initial start up? I've never played with these. No issues with the point type mag as I can see when it will fire but there isn't anything to see in the electronic type. Thanks guys.

Is it just the mag or do you have a crank trigger? Do you have timing management?

put your crank at the position you want it to fire in on no ! firing stroke then point the rotor arm at no 1 cap/lead turning the mag body opposite the rotation of the mag rotor arm to get to this mark .....it will then start and you can strobe it
im assuming your not using a crank trigger but if you are the same deal exept you also need to point the pick up at the magnet on the crank as well then strobe it moving either the mag body or crank trigger to get what you want,

A friend showed me this; with the mag 44 in and no cap just roll the engine till the rotor snaps for #1 @50* BTDC. do not touch the rotor, just free. When you start it, it will be at about 28*. This is for the mag triggered setup.

Sorry guys, been busy. Dale , it has no crank trigger. Jeff , I presume you only turn the engine by hand & if the rotor 'kicks" around 50 then it should fire around 28, is that correct?

I put the Set-Up Cap on w/the timing light, spin it w/o plugs in. This way you are priming for oil pres also and getting the timing REAL close so it doesn't "sneeze" on that initial start!

Yes, no cap on the mag, just let the rotor snap on it's own as you gently roll the engine over until it snaps for the #1 position. If it does that at say, 40*, roll backwards a bit to free tension in the mag and loosen the clamp and advance it a bit tighten the clamp and roll again gently in the running direction and read the point it snaps again and when you get it to do that at 50* btdc the idle timing will be at about 28* when you shoot it with your timing light running.
It is really nice to be able to cold set one of these and be confident it is within 1/2 degree, particularly in a between rounds thrash, you could actually just roll up and run it if you had to, once you find that perfect set spot for your particular mag and drive setup.

Just like to say thanks to Jeff as I did it the way he said and the new 481 X motor fired up straight away & the timing was within a couple of degrees. Now that I know I'm sure that I will get it closer next time. Definetley recommend this method and very easy.

I'm glad that the proceedure worked for you; when you find that the sweet spot is, say 48* or 51* for that engine/mag drive/mag combo you can get very accurate. This can be very helpful for the spare bullet in the trailer if you leave a mag in it for those between rounds thrashes......we have not done that yet, but we should be.
Hey Gene, did your family build some funny car chassis years ago? I have been told that I owned one if the info is correct.

Yes, Terenzio Bros Racing Engines and Chassis
Look for SEMA Tag #100 on leftside on upper rail just below the rollcage front loop,
or when we got lazy we just stampet the rail.

Thanks Gene, that car is long gone. I think the tag was a 1/2 round strip of tubing on the left side but I don't remember the number. It had about a 90 Camaro body and very nice black anodized tin work on the chassis and tank. I bought it from Donnie Holbrook many years ago, it was about 118 wheelbase. Very nicely built car.
