I am thinking about switching from stacked 6 shooters to the Power Grid. Before I make my mind up I thought I would go here for comments. I was wondering how many are using the power grid? What issues have you had, if any?

    Thanks

Do it now. I love the grid and it's cheap enough to put a spare in the trailer, small too. Has a safety feature that returns your car to a preset rpm after a preset amount of time after you leave the line. My grid is set to return to 1800 rpm's 4.00 sec. after it leaves, 6.15 sec in the 1/4.

    would like to love it

I have a powergird on my car. But I have yet to get it to run like it is suppose to.

It has all the features and all but on my setup i get some kind of weird sutter (engine runs perfect without it) I have been chasing this problem for a while now but i have yet to find a solution. this means i havn't been able to make a propper run with it.

Don't get me wrong i believe it should work and i know it does for many other people.

Sorry i can't be more specific. But just letting you know it may not be as straight forward as it sounds.

Get a Command Module from Leahy, far simpler, far superior construction.

Sune it sounds like you have the same problem I had when I first installed my grid , on the first batch of unit they had a program glitch that enabled the run safety limiter to be active when the car started. Re-set your limit to ..say.....4000rpms and try it again it should rev to 4000 and then stutter again. If it does' just wire in a toggle switch to activate the three step at around 6500rpms, turn it on and it will override the safety feature allowing the car to start and do a burnout, after you get through with the burnout and backing up place car in low gear, trun off three step, stage the car , and make the run. Just make sure you set the the run timer to one or two tenths slower than your expected et to keep it from activating during the run. I set my safety rpm limiter to 1800 rpms, I may run off the end of the track someday but it will be at 1800 rpms, not 10000.Good luck.

Probably...but insted of removing mine and sending it back after I found out what was happening I just put a toggle switch on the dash that activates my three step or burnout limiter. I set it to 6500 rpms, but I don't flat foot the throttle during a burnout, I still kind of watch the tach and try to keep the revs to arround 6000 rpms manually. The three step just saves me from overreving it. By having a switch on the dash, which I turn on after starting, it keeps me from having to hold a button down while I burn out. As I think I said before MSD has since changed the internal program so that the safety limiter only activates once the rpms exceed 6000 rpms (I think maybe 6500). This fix by MSD would allow you to start, burnout (as long as rpms stayed below the factory default), backup, stage. and make a run without the safety limiter coming on untill after the time you have preset.

Had a similar issue. If it's a ProMag, make sure the phasing on the Mag is right on first.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think we are going to stick with the Six Shooters.

    Grid

I have run the power grid on Chris Foster's car since the end of 2011.

I always max out the safety rev limiter - that way it's never a problem. I also 'unlatch' it in the settings.

I have ran both the Command Module and the Grid. The Command Module is $1800 and some change, the Power Grid is just over $400.

The only problems I have had with the Power Grid is trying to activate the launch wire off a conventional air throttle switch to a Normally Closed electric switch. You have to drop voltage to the launch wire to start the run. Two different 'high quality' switches - the same result, the vibration from the run would toggle the start wire on and off. We switched to an electronic switch on the pedal and haven't had any issues since.

The USB interface is much quicker to upload a run than the old 8973 was. I would recommend going to an electronics store and buying a spare usb cable, because that's the only way you talk to the box. We had a cable go dead, but that had more to do with being thrown around from the tow car. Obviously it's still not as quick as changing a chip but if you have less than a minute to make a change, you probably don't need to make it most of the time.

Get the grid....once you set it up right you will love it. It will do so much more than a six shooter or two six shooters. When I ran one six shooter I could feel each step of timing as it was put back in, with the Grid it does' it so smooth you never feel it.

I bought my grid last spring from the Summitt pro shop for $312.00.

Also, with the grid you can buy the optional remote control and change setting without hooking up the USB cable. Would be a great tuning tool for changes in the staging lanes.
I have not bought the remote yet, FYI.

    remote?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no remote control for the Grid. There is a remote control for the 8973 and 8971 Top Fuel ignition but nothing as of yet for the Grid. I spoke with Joe Pando of MSD about this Saturday at the IMIS show. He says they might have something by the end of next year. They have programmers working on their EFI platform that will work with most tablets and smart phones, and hope that technology will carry over for Power Grid platforms.

    Will,

my race shop is about 45 minutes away from me.
I could swear I read that there was an optional remote controller deal and my grid has a little flexable shortie antenna on it.

Will look into it this week.
