shelf life of alcohol

    what is the shelf life of alcohol in a 55 gallon drum,or a 5 gallon jug? Is there any way to confirm its good? can u see water in it like racing gas would show?

    treating methanol

    personally i treat mine with 100 mils of caster oil per 5 gallons of methanol.
    keep containers off concrete floor, on a pallet is good.
    Never had an issue even after several years.

    I dont know if your usa sanctioning bodies permit this.

    with that in i dont think it will pass a fuel check but if your not running national events doesnt matter i have left mine in the drum and in jugs until i run out over the winter and used it in the spring never seemed to be a problem but again im not running national events

    Do yourself a favor and buy a hydrometer and check specific gravity
    this is the only way to know

    Go to a lab supply place like mscdirect.com and you can get a beaker, thermometer and hydrometer for around 50-60 dollars.

    An open drum wicks up water fast. We go two weekends on a 55 gallon drum. if any is left over we use it for start up fuel. Get a hydrometer.

    Methanol is anhydrous, meaning it readily accepts water into mixture.

    The more humid the climate you live in, the shorter the shelf life.

    Your profile says West Palm beach, so if it's in a lined drum, it might last a couple of months, if it's in a non lined drum, probably a month tops.

    That's meaning it will still pass NHRA fuel check.

    Will the fuel still work in your car if you don't run a fuel check category? Sure. Just the more water there is in your fuel, the more artificial humidity you are injecting into the combustion process.

    I ve got it in jugs and in a steel drum in a relatively cool garage.
