The idea of gapless rings sounds wonderful, since the "gap" is made of a lessor thickness than a conventional ring, is this product really useable in a high blown hp motor?

    And.......

Total Seals web site says to use "a positive valve guide seal", n' the one who works on my heads says, that a seal won't fit when used with a tripple wound spring, which I have.

What distruibtor or product are you using, if this senero is you??

    Rings

Totalseal seems to really thump the gapless rings for high HP blower motors. I'm no expert on the subject but I think a good HTD Dykes top, HTD napier second and a conventional oil ring will work as good or better. Plus they will last alot longer IMO. If you want to save a few $$ just a regular moly 2nd would work fine, just have to keep a eye on it more. You don't see gapless rings in Top Fuel or even TAD that I know of, maybe there is a reason for that.

As far a valve seals, we don't even use them.

    All this is my opinion

Comax, I'd like to expand on your comment if I may, and then ask a question.

Keith Jones (of Total Seal) seems to really recommend tool steel gapless TOP rings for blown alky applications like Outlaw PM, TAFC/D, etc. Have not tried them yet myself and I've been waffling over whether I want to try them or not. I would be interested to hear of any real world feedback from those who have tried these gapless TS TOP rings. Not talking the TS second rings here, just the first ring, and only in the tool steel form. For purpose of discusion, a 4.500 bore. Thanks.

Saw a weird deal once.....the guy had bookoo clearance on the valve guides.
We tighteneed them up and put seals on and he picked up 3# on his pressure gauge.

    8 int guides leaking boost.....

On the inner springs (3 pc) not clearing the seals, they sell a .485 cutter and seals which seem to clear most spring ID's.

I gave the gapless rings a try. I smoked like a freight train! I am sure someone will chime in and say i didnt install them right but went back to what we were using before and no more smoke.

I think the idea is a good one but maybe not for blown applications.

    gapless rings..........

I sell/design pistons and related hardware for a forged piston manufacture. We have access to various suppliers, Total Seal being one of them. They make and sell very good products, and I really enjoy ordering parts and talking to their employees. I have customers that have excellent results with gapless rings, and others that don't. I also have customers that have trouble sealing up a conventional ring engine, LOL. I think each customer must decide for themself what works for them. If you have never tried a certain ring combination, be it gapless or otherwise, and you just dismiss it based on what someone else has said, you may be giving something up. Or, if you respect the person and believe they gave the other combination a fair and equal test, you may be saving some time and money. I guess its the old cliche, "your mileage may vary".
On another note, I also deal with the guys at Ackerly-Childs, and find them just as helpful and knowledgable as the Total Seal group. They have products that the other doesn't , and vice versa. If I was looking at changing my ring combination, I would talk to as many established experts as I could B4 I made any decisions, and the two I have mentioned are good examples. We tried some TS gapless top rings, definitley less fuel in oil, but no measurable performance increase.

"spoke with Clay, the Vice President, who said that all of Brad Andersons motors use their gapless ring".

You might want to look into that statement a little further.....

    Gap Less

I run total seal rings in my blowen bbc. I wan't planning on it, but ordered custom pistons from BME, and they said to use them. Dyke top and gap less second. i put on valve seals, but the springs chewed them up. Still doesn't smoke and i don't have much alcohol in the oil. I run the oil for 6-8 passes and still looks great when it comes out. Its not a huge HP motor, (runs 6.80's) but I like the Total Seals in it.
